Man receives giant tip after kind act at the grocery store

It was just one Texas man trying to do a nice thing, but the act led to a massive thank you from the initial recipient.

WFAA reported Kasey Simmons, 32, said he just wants to make people smile, but the server at a Little Elm, Texas-area Applebee's didn't realize that smile could make as much of an impact on someone as it did recently.

Simmons said someone entered the restaurant and made a small order, but left him a $500 tip.

"They ordered the cheapest thing on the menu of flavored water -- it was $0.37," he told WFAA. "But my tip was about 50,000-percent."

Why did Simmons receive such a large tip? It was the day before when he noticed a woman who was upset at a local grocery store. WFAA reports Simmons approached her and insisted on paying her grocery bill. "I insisted," he said. "It was only $17, but it's not about the money -- it's about showing someone you care."

Unbeknownst to him, that day was the three-year anniversary of her husband’s death and the woman’s daughter came into Applebee’s to thank Simmons for his act of kindness. "I had no idea that was going on, but I knew something was making her sad," Simmons said.

Simmons, who was glad to make others happy, would like to meet the family to thank them in person.
