Workers trying to prevent a dam breach in Oconee County were able to use a siphon system and lower the water level there significantly, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post Wednesday.
Materials also will be put in to help shore up the dam and stop water from flowing through a damaged pipe, according to the post.
A breach could trap people in their homes, authorities have said.
Residents of homes on Briar Lakes Court were told Tuesday to leave to avoid being trapped, the sheriff's office said. About 10 homes were in jeopardy.
The sheriff’s office also noted that with such major issues to handle, homeowners would have to deal with more routine problems caused by the rain.
A post stated: “Folks, we sympathize with you, but your roofs and basements leaking and your yard flooding is something that you are going to have to deal with through your insurance company and through private contractors. You will have to make those arrangements yourself.”
