Woodstock schools led Cherokee County in third grade reading and eighth grade math results in the latest Georgia Milestones assessments.

Woodstock Middle School had the highest percentage of students scoring proficient or higher on eighth grade math assessments, with 58.2 percent. Mountain Road Elementary School had 66.7 percent of third graders scoring proficient or higher on Milestones reading assessments.

Scoring “proficient” or “distinguished” on Georgia Milestones means a student is ready to move on to the next grade level. Scoring “developing” or “beginning” signifies that a student is not ready to move on. Eighth grade is considered a critical point for students’ understanding of math, and third grade a critical point for students’ reading proficiency.

In Cherokee County, 10 of its 24 elementary schools had at least half of their third graders score proficient or higher on the reading exam. Here are all Cherokee elementary schools’ proficiency levels:

• Mountain Road Elementary School: 66.7 percent proficient or higher, up 39.5 percent from 2017

• Hickory Flat Elementary School: 64.5 percent, up 14.2 percent from 2017

• Free Home Elementary School: 62 percent, up 71.7 percent from 2017

• Bascomb Elementary School: 61.9 percent, down 6.8 percent from 2017

• Indian Knoll Elementary School: 58 percent, up 17.4 percent from 2017

• Sixes Elementary School: 57.6 percent, up 17.4 percent from 2017

• Avery Elementary School: 57 percent, up 10.4 percent from 2017

• Liberty Elementary School: 54.1 percent, up 2.5 percent from 2017

• Little River Elementary School: 54.1 percent, up 3.6 percent from 2017

• Macedonia Elementary School: 50 percent, down 6.4 percent from 2017

• Johnston Elementary School: 49.5 percent, up 2.7 percent from 2017

• Arnold Mill Elementary School: 48.9 percent, up 0.6 percent from 2017

• Ball Ground Elementary School: 47.5 percent, up 21.2 percent from 2017

• Woodstock Elementary School: 44.2 percent, down 1.8 percent from 2017

• J. Knox Elementary School: 40.9 percent, down 18.8 percent from 2017

• Carmel Elementary School: 40.6 percent, down 25.5 percent from 2017

• Holly Springs Elementary School: 40.5 percent, up 14.4 percent from 2017

• Oak Grove Elementary School: 40.5 percent, up 25 percent from 2017

• R.M. Moore Elementary School: 39.3 percent, up 12 percent from 2017

• Clark Creek Elementary School: 39.3 percent, down 6.4 percent from 2017

• Boston Elementary School: 29.6 percent, down 31 percent from 2017

• William G. Hasty Sr. Elementary School: 17.8 percent, up 47.1 percent from 2017

• Canton Elementary School: 17.4 percent, down 26 percent from 2017

• Clayton Elementary School: 15.2 percent, down 64.6 percent from 2017

Woodstock Middle School was the only middle school where more than half of students scored proficient or higher on the math exam; the next closest is Creekland Middle School, where 49 percent of students were proficient or better.

• Mill Creek Middle School: 46.1 percent, up 32.5 percent from 2017

• Dean Rusk Middle School: 33.2 percent, down 28.9 percent from 2017
