What movies and TV shows filmed in Sandy Springs in 2017?

Metro Atlanta is often referred to as the “Hollywood of the South” for the growing number of movies and television shows filmed here each year.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” superhero blockbusters from the Marvel Universe, shows from HGTV, slapstick comedies and several Oscar nominees have been filmed in and around Atlanta. Some were even filmed in north Fulton County.

Sandy Springs handed out 17 filming permits last year, for projects ranging from a Clint Eastwood movie to an NBA commercial to a reality show on Bravo.

Here’s what was filmed in Sandy Springs last year, according to a list of permits issued from the city:

A television show on Fox, “Star’s” main cast features Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt and Jude Demorest. Lenny Kravitz, Patti LaBelle, Missy Elliott and Mike Epps have also appeared on the show, which was created by Lee Daniels. It is a drama about three young singers trying to find their way in the music business. Scenes from episode 11 of season one — titled “Saving Face” — were filmed in Sandy Springs.

This show airs on BET and was created by record producer Irv Gotti. Each episode explores a different “tale” in hip-hop history. The second episode “A Story to Tell” dramatizes a 1997 song by the late Notorious B.I.G. and was filmed in Sandy Springs. In the song, Biggie hooks up with a woman who is also dating an NBA player. This episode, which aired on July 18, stars Jennifer Freeman, Elise Neal and Woody McClain.

“Fam-i-ly” (listed as “Family” on IMDB)
This movie doesn’t have a release date, but according to IMDB, it’s in post-production. Directed and written by Laura Steinel, it stars “Saturday Night Live’s” Kate McKinnon and Taylor Schilling of “Orange is the New Black” fame. The comedy is about an “emotionally-stunted aunt” trying to bond with her niece who wants to “run away from home and become a Juggalo.”

This CW drama is a reboot of a 1980s soap opera of the same name. The show is about the richest of the rich, following two wealthy American families as they struggle over power. A trailer for the show features mansions, private jets, love and fights. The pilot of the show was filmed in Sandy Springs. Twelve episodes have aired so far, and IMDB shows that episodes 13 to 22 will air later this year.

NBA commercial

Among the list of filming permits issued in 2017 for Sandy Springs is something called “HUMBLE NBA COMMERCIAL.” That may be this commercial featuring Kendrick Lamar’s hit “Humble” promoting the NBA playoffs.

Commercials for Costco, Coca-Cola, Dominos, SCANA and Johnsonville Meats were also filmed in Sandy Springs last year.

“The Real Housewives of Atlanta”

This Bravo reality show centered around Atlanta “housewives” has been on the air since 2008. The 10th season premiered in November and at least three scenes were shot in Sandy Springs.

“The 15:17 to Paris”

Directed and produced by 87-year-old four-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood, the film is based on a real event and stars the real heroes of that event. It’s about a 2015 attack, where a man opened fire in a train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris. His rifle jammed and he was tackled by passengers, including three Americans. Those three Americans play themselves in the movie, which also stars Judy Greer and Jenna Fischer. It’s set to hit theaters Friday.

No, this isn’t the Matt Damon movie. That’s “Downsizing.” Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe star in this made-for-TV movie about two people forced into a wedding after becoming teenage parents. It aired on TV One in June.
