A southwest Atlanta middle school library is undergoing a transformation, to be completed at the hands of dozens of volunteers.
The project to update the Crawford W. Long Middle School space is part of biopharmaceutical company AbbVie's fifth annual Week of Possibilities, a global volunteering program that addresses challenges facing the underserved, a press release said. AbbVie partnered with Heart of America, a group of independent companies that participate in civic involvement and philanthropy.
Long Middle School was chosen partly because it has a “high need from a student perspective,” with more than 70 percent of its students receiving a free or reduced lunch, said Heart of America spokeswoman Christine Lucas. She said the library at the decades-old school was “in need of modernization to inspire students.”
The renovation includes upgrades such as a large-scale repainting of the library, new tables and chairs and a work station with a 70-inch large-screen monitor, 3D printer and STEM-based technologies. It will also include a new mural and campus-wide beautification projects.
The work began a couple of weeks ago, but the bulk of the transformation will take place Thursday during an event that will culminate with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Long Middle School is located at 3200 Latona Drive SW.
