J.D. Bertrand of Roswell is no longer a lock to join the linebacking corps at the University of Georgia.

The senior Blessed Trinity linebacker, deemed a four-star talent by Rivals and 247sports, announced in a tweet late Friday night that he would be decommitting from the Dawgs and reopening his recruitment.

“After prayer and consideration, I have decided to decommit from the University of Georgia,” Bertrand wrote. “Thank you to Coach (Kirby) Smart, (linebackers coach Glenn) Schumann, the UGA staff and the fans for their support throughout my high school career. I will be reopening my recruitment. I will not be doing any interviews at this time. Thank you.”

According to 247sports, Bertrand verbally committed to Georgia on July 15, 2017. After he decommitted on Friday, he received a scholarship offer from a hated Bulldogs rival, the Florida Gators, on Saturday.

In all, Bertrand has 12 Division I offers, from schools including LSU, Georgia Tech, Pitt, North Carolina, Iowa State, Stanford and others. He is listed as being 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds. Both Rivals and 247sports rank him as one of the 20 top linebackers in the country for the 2019 recruiting class.

Bertrand plays linebacker and tight end for Blessed Trinity, and was a key member of their 2018 team that won the Georgia Class AAAA championship.

In a game earlier this season, a 38-7 win for Blessed Trinity over Benedictine, Bertrand tallied 10 tackles, three of which were for a loss. According to MaxPreps, Bertrand has 33 tackles and three sacks on the season, in addition to five catches for 58 yards.

The Blessed Trinity Titans are 6-0 this season and face Flowery Branch on Friday.

Bertrand was the third prospect to decommit from Georgia in the span of a week, joining five-star wideout Jadon Haselwood of Cedar Grove and four-star defensive back Jalen Perry of Dacula.
