Roswell will begin a new citywide garbage collection system in November. All city sanitation customers will receive new 96-gallon containers that are compatible with the city's trucks.

Some changes are coming to how trash is taken out in Roswell.

The city announced Tuesday that it is implementing a “citywide semi-automatic curbside garbage collection” program, which will begin in November.

The description of the program is a mouthful, but what this means is that every household that is a sanitation customer of the city of Roswell will receive a 96-gallon container for garbage collection. That container is designed to fit the automatic lift on the city’s garbage trucks, which grabs the container, dumps the trash in the back of the truck, drops it off and movesto the next one.

Roswell launched a pilot program in January using this system in four neighborhoods. The city says it demonstrated efficient garbage collection, reduced employee injuries and helped retain qualified staff.

“This program will provide for a more efficient collection of household garbage in our community,” Nick Pezzello, Roswell’s solid waste services manager, said in a statement. “We are committed to serving Roswell by keeping it beautiful and this is one of the ways we do it.”

The new system will not change garbage collection schedules. Customers should receive their new trash containers in mid-November. Once you receive your new container, the city asks that you begin using it the next day.

Residents will be responsible for the care, proper use, safekeeping, damage and cleanliness of their containers, the city says.

Residents with questions about this new program should contact Lisa Hines, the environmental and public works programs coordinator for the city, at lhines@roswellgov.com or 770-594-6451.
