Portraits of vets to be shown in Atlanta exhibit debuting on Veterans Day

An exhibit showcasing portraits of veterans will debut at Woodruff Arts Center on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11.

The Veterans Portrait Project was created by wounded veteran and combat photographer Stacy Pearsall, who has taken more than 6,000 portraits of those who have served in conflicts going back to World War II, according to a press release.

Pearsall, who suffered injuries from two IED explosions, started the project “as an emotionally cathartic, physically healing tool,” she said in a statement.

“I’d committed my life to my country and when I could no longer serve in uniform, the VPP became an extension of my service,” Pearsall said. “My new mission is to share the unique stories of military veterans and honor their service in a unique, creative way so their contributions to American military history are never lost.”

The exhibit, which includes 44 of Pearsall’s framed portraits, will be open from Saturday through Jan. 16 at the Beauchamp C. Carr Gallery, 1280 Peachtree St. They’ll be visible during Free Family Fun, a no-charge festival on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Woodruff Arts Center — a combination of the Alliance Theatre, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and High Museum of Art — provides veterans and military families access to exhibitions, performances and parking at no cost through a sponsorship from The Home Depot Foundation. Delta Air Lines is co-sponsoring the exhibit.
