Man robbed, shot after meeting woman using dating app

A 19-year-old man was robbed and shot in DeKalb County after arranging a date using an app, his family told Channel 2 Action News.

Dontay Copeland is recovering after surgery on his leg at Grady Memorial Hospital, his grandmother, Linda Okoro, said.

Doctors have told the family Copeland may have to learn how to walk again.

Okoro was at church Sunday when she learned her grandson had been shot.

“It is still going through my mind,” she told Channel 2. “This is the most aggravating part of learning something like this.”

DeKalb police said Copeland met a woman on the app and then rode with the woman from Cobb to DeKalb.

The two of them walked into a wood line along Willowick Drive in Lithonia, where investigators said two men were waiting. They took Copeland’s two cellphones, wallet and then handed a gun to the woman, who shot Copeland in the leg, police told Channel 2.

As the suspects left, Copeland made his way to a nearby home to call 911, police said.

“Whoever did this, I am hoping that you feeling what I am feeling today,” Okoro said. “This boy is loved. Six aunts, multiple cousins. We’re not trying to retaliate. We don’t want to lose nobody. We just want you to know that he got love behind him.”
