King Center announces events around 50th anniversary of assassination


The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change has announced a set of events in early April planned around the 50th anniversary of King’s assassination.

Among the highlights: a series of “Beloved Community Talks” that will feature the Rev. Bernice King, the civil rights leader’s daughter, Children’s Defense Fund founder Marian Wright Edelman and nonviolence activists. The talks, in concert with the Carter Center, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Racial Equity Center, will take place over three days, April 5-7.

King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

On the day of the anniversary, the center also is planning to award the Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Prize in a ceremony beginning at 10:30 a.m. At 6:01 p.m., the moment King was shot in Memphis, the King Center and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis will lead a “global bellringing.”
