Polcie investigate a suspicious death at home in Suwanee.

A 63-year-old Suwanee woman was found dead with a pillow “smushed” over her face and a sheet covering her body Monday, a neighbor told Channel 2 Action News.

Gwinnett County police are investigating the case as a “suspicious death,” a spokesman said Monday afternoon.

The woman was found dead in the basement apartment she rented in a home on Collins Port Cove, Channel 2 Action News reported. The owners of the home were out of town for a few days and had not heard from their tenant. When they went to check on her, they found her dead, Gwinnett County Cpl. Wilbert Rundles said.

The homeowners rushed next door to neighbor Joshua Belcher and asked him to come with them to the basement. They asked him to lift the sheet that covered the woman’s body, and he found a pillow on top of her face, Belcher told Channel 2.

First responders “described it as finding [the body] in a suspicious manner,” Rundles said. That triggered crime scene investigators to respond. The police department had obtained a warrant to search the house by Monday afternoon, and were also searching through the home’s garbage outside, Channel 2 reported.

Police did not include information about how the body was found in a Monday evening release.

A cause of death is unknown as of Monday afternoon, Rundles said. The death has not been classified as a homicide at this point.
