You can look at the calendar and know it’s spring, which technically arrived at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.
But there are other clear signs that the season has changed.
For instance, note the myriad weather developments in the 24 hours leading up to the new season.
• There were temperatures in the 70s on Monday.
• There were tornado warnings in Alabama in the afternoon, which heightened awareness of approaching severe weather and forced cancellation of some after-school activities in North Georgia.
• And there were powerful storms overnight that damaged homes, toppled trees and knocked out power.
There’s now talk of snow.
“A cold front coming in from north is bringing chilly air and a chance for some snow flurries in the North Georgia mountains overnight,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Tuesday.
There are also other ways to tell it’s spring, such as:
• Your March Madness bracket is in tatters, thanks to teams like Maryland, Baltimore County and Loyola Chicago.
• You note the recent top-five finishes of Tiger Woods, and you think of the Masters, which begins April 5 in Augusta.
• You start sneaking looks at spring training baseball on television and online, and realize that the Braves’ season opener is less than 10 days away.
