DeKalb County is accepting donations for its “Bags of Love” drive this month with the hopes of providing goods to its homeless population.

The county, in partnership with Henry County-based event planning company Pinch of Excellence, hopes to give at least 250 residents sleeping bags, hats, gloves, heavy duty socks or other items before wintry weather arrives.

At least 460 homeless people are in DeKalb on any given night, according to a survey conducted by National Alliance to End Homelessness in January. By comparison, Atlanta's homeless population is 3,572.

“We must continue to work in collaboration and assisting in every way possible to eradicate the problem,” DeKalb commissioner Gregory Adams said in a news release about the clothing drive.

Residents can donate items in the lobby area of the Manuel J. Maloof building on 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. Donors are asked to bring fleece-lined sleeping bags that can withstand 20-degree weather or less.

Donations will be accepted through Nov. 28.
