Gwinnett County and the city of Johns Creek are teaming up to widen a road and add a pedestrian bridge over the Chattahoochee River.

Both governments are working to widen a road from four lanes to six that goes over the river. The road is Pleasant Hill Road on the Gwinnett side and State Bridge Road on the Johns Creek side.

Johns Creek is taking the lead on the project, handling design and construction. At a meeting last week, Gwinnett County’s board of commissioners approved a deal with the city, where it would reimburse Johns Creek for 50 percent of the cost of the project for up to a maximum amount of $750,000, according to an agenda from that meeting.

The total cost of the project is expected to be $1.5 million. In 2017, both Johns Creek and Gwinnett County received $1.5 million each from the State Road and Tollway Authority through grants for road widening work.

Johns Creek approved the deal several weeks ago.

Both sides agreed to remove the sidewalks from the existing bridges to widen the roads. To keep it safe for pedestrians, a new pedestrian bridge will be constructed on the north side of the river.

When Johns Creek approved the deal, city manager Warren Hutmacher said the project “will ensure a safe crossing for pedestrians in both directions” and that many people use the existing sidewalks on the bridge to get to and from work.

On the Gwinnett side, Pleasant Hill Road will be widened from the river to McClure Bridge Road. On the Johns Creek side, State Bridge Road will be widened from the river to Medlock Bridge Road.
