Gwinnett County is (still) the largest school district in Georgia

The numbers are in, and Gwinnett County Public Schools is still the largest district in Georgia.

The district conducted its annual “first count” of enrollment on Aug. 8, the second day of the school year. The enrollment total was 172,290, and district officials expect it to increase to 180,186 by the final count after Labor Day, according to data provided by the school system.

There are 6,024 special education students in the district. Elementary school students were the largest group, with 73,604 counted. There are 39,805 students in district middle schools and 52,857 in high schools.

According to the most recently updated rankings from education and housing analysis site Niche.com, Cobb County Schools is the second largest district and DeKalb County Schools is the third. Fulton County Schools is the fourth-largest, with Clayton County Schools rounding out the top five. Atlanta Public Schools is the sixth-largest district, according to Niche.
