After six dedicated years of service to the Duluth Police Department, K9 Alf has been retired due to health issues. The Duluth City Council recently approved a nominal fee sale of Alf to his handler, Officer Misty Howell. Officer Howell will assume total responsibility for the proper care of Alf.

According to city documents, the value of the dog is less than $500, and to continue ownership will result in city expenditures for veterinarian fees, food and shelter. As part of the agreement, Officer Howell agrees for a period of at least two years not to sell or transfer ownership of the dog for an amount in excess of $500. In addition, Officer Howell agrees the dog will not be used for police work, including as a drug dog.

Duluth Police posted a heart-warming video tribute to K9 Alf on their Facebook page: www.tinyurl.com/DuluthAlf.
