Banyan Street Capital released renderings of what Peachtree Center may look like in 2019.

Banyan Street Capital released renderings of what Peachtree Center may look like in 2019.

The remodeling of downtown Atlanta’s Peachtree Center has begun, and an idea of what the overhaul will entail is taking shape.

The retail center and public spaces will be called The Hub, property owner Banyan Street Capital announced Monday. Plans for the multi-million dollar refresh  was announced about 18 months ago.

The updated three-level shopping center at 216 Peachtree St. NE — expected to open in 2019 — will gain new restaurants and shops, but none have been announced yet. Recently-acquired  tenants include the Atlanta Regional Commission and Literacy Action.

Current tenants will stay open throughout the renovation, with short closures as needed.

The redesigned courtyard will include a glass-enclosed staircase, reflective pools with seating and a “suspended canopy of linear lighting elements ... that will be especially stunning at night,” the news release said.

Rudy Prio Touzet, CEO of Banyan Street Capital, said the renovation will bring the complex “into the 21st century, in step with the renaissance of downtown Atlanta as a whole.”

The property, which sits atop a MARTA station, was designed and developed by famed Atlanta architect John. C. Portman Jr. in the 1960s and 1970s.
