DeKalb officials warn that weekend rains could cause sewer overflows

Watch where you’re stepping in DeKalb County this weekend, y’all.

DeKalb officials on Friday warned that the rain set to fall this weekend could cause sewer overflows and spills. The next three days may bring 2 to 4 inches of rain to parts of North Georgia and 5 inches to others, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Sewer overflows and spills have plagued the county, leading to problems for businesses and fines for DeKalb.

“We continue to make progress in repairing and updating our sewer system that has been neglected for many years,” said DeKalb CEO Michael Thurmond.

The county said it has made several moves to “address and prevent” spills, including replacing 2,200 vented covers since January 2017. They plan to replace 1,800 more.

This weekend and beyond, you can report overflows and spills to the county’s 24-hour reporting phone line, 770-270-6243.
