Lawrenceville residents should be skeptical if someone calls and claims to be from the city’s public works department, police said.
Scammers have been calling city residents claiming to be from Lawrenceville Public Works, saying customers have overdue bills, according to Lawrenceville police. The scammers report the customers have “inflated balances” and say the customers’ gas will be cut off if they don’t pay, according to police.

Georgia Power alerted the police department to the apparent scam. Some calls have come from the number 806-416-0248. When the number was called at noon Tuesday, it went to a voicemail that said in a faux-robotic voice that it belonged to “utility department.”
The calls “appear to originate from overseas,” but could be locals using “spoof-dialing” techniques, the department said.
Customers should not engage with the scammers if they receive a call, as the scammers will try to get personal or financial information, police said.
