A student at an Atlanta high school accidentally discharged a gun Tuesday, officials said.

The KIPP Atlanta Collegiate High School student brought the gun to campus despite a rule against all weapons, Principal Dave Howland said Wednesday in a letter to parents.

The school is working with Atlanta police and school officials “to determine appropriate consequences for the student involved,” Howland said.

Early Wednesday morning, about 90 miles northeast of Atlanta, school authorities received a tip a student may be carrying a gun in a book bag at Madison County High School, Superintendent Allen McCannon said.

The sheriff’s office was called when school officials found the gun about 8 a.m. and the minor student was arrested on charges of bringing a gun on campus, McCannon said.

Though the school wasn’t officially locked down, officials notified parents and gave the option to pick students up and take them home.

Extra precautions were put in place the rest of the day and officials said the incident was an “isolated incident.”

Threats against school have risen in the past week.

A person with a gun entered Martin Luther King High School in Lithonia Wednesday, prompting a lockdown that sent some students racing into closets for safety, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Two people were arrested.

Last week, a Gwinnett County elementary school was locked down when a parent allegedly threatened a student.

School and local police responded to Baggett Elementary in Norcross and students were kept off the playgrounds and inside the building during the school day, Principal Charlotte Sadler said in a letter to parents.

In Athens, threats against two high schools were investigated by police in and determined not to be credible.
