Atlanta Public Schools will have two new spaces — a charter school and a kindergarten center — for students this year.

KIPP Soul Primary

This new kindergarten through fourth grade primary charter school will open to an inaugural class of 125 kindergarteners for the 2018-2019 school year. The school, which offers citywide enrollment to any student who qualifies for APS, will grow by a grade level each year.

The opening is a result of the expansion of KIPP Metro Atlanta Collaborative Inc., a nonprofit that runs numerous charter schools in the city. The APS district authorized in December a one-year lease for the school to use the former Walter White Elementary School, which closed at the end of 2012 and was later leased for five years to another charter group, Kindezi Schools.

The school’s founding principal will be Tasha Davis, formerly the principal of KIPP Vision Academy. KIPP Soul is located at 1890 Detroit Ave. NW.

Morningside K Center

Morningside Elementary School is opening a kindergarten center at the Atlanta Metropolitan Cathedral.

Despite being on a separate campus than the first through fifth graders at 1053 E. Rock Springs Road, the students at the 999 Briarcliff Road annex will still be part of the same elementary school. The change was needed to address overcrowding at Morningside, an April post on the school's website said.

K Center teachers include Elizabeth Schill and Becky Georges. Vicky Clifton, whose twin boys will be starting at the K Center, will be the nurse, the website says.
