No NBA team spent a draft pick on Alpharetta native Kobi Simmons in the 2017 draft, but the Memphis Grizzlies signed the 6-foot-5 guard as a free agent shortly after.
A month after signing his rookie contract and playing in the NBA’s summer league in Las Vegas, Simmons decided it was time to pay back one of the loves of his life, his mother.
Simmons bought his mom a Range Rover and surprised her with it on Wednesday, according to a tweet the 20-year-old posted.
"Got my mama a surprise today," he wrote, with some emoji's mixed in. "Love you mama. There is nothing I can do to ever repay you but that will not stop me from trying. Love!"
The Grizzlies saw the tweet, and whomever runs the team's Twitter handle gave their approval, replying with a blue heart emoji.
Simmons, the all-time leading scorer at St. Francis High School, signed a two-way contract with the Grizzlies after playing one season for the University of Arizona. A two-way contract is new to the NBA and it is designated for players who might need a little more time developing in the G-League, a minor league of sorts for the NBA.

Under the contract, Simmons will earn a base salary of $75,000 in the 2017-18 season, but has the potential to earn up to $279,000 with the Grizzlies. The two-way contract limits how much the player can play in the NBA, so Simmons can spend no more than 45 days on Memphis’ active roster.
Simmons had a decent Summer League campaign, scoring 4.2 points per-game over six contests.
But surely he scored more points with his mom Wednesday.
