2018 MLB Draft: Four from Georgia selected in the first round

Four players from Georgia were drafted in the first round of the 2018 MLB draft.

Major League Baseball just got a bit peachier.

Four players who call the state of Georgia home were selected in the first round of the league’s amateur draft Monday night.

First off the board was Joey Bart, a Buford native and Georgia Tech catcher taken No. 2 overall by the San Francisco Giants.

But Bart wasn’t the only one from Gwinnett County taken in the first round. The Houston Astros picked up Suwanee’s Seth Beer with pick No. 28.

A 6-foot-3 first baseman, Beer played three seasons at Clemson University. This past season he hit for a .301 average along with 22 home runs and 54 RBIs in 63 games. Beer played his high school ball at Lambert in Forsyth County.

Bart was also not the only catcher from Georgia taken in the first round of the draft. With pick No. 23, the New York Yankees scooped up Anthony Seigler of Cartersville High School.

The 5-foot-11 18-year-old is ambidextrous, meaning he can hit and pitch both left-handed and right-handed. Seigler likely won't ever pitch in the majors, but threw about 80 mph with his left hand and 90 mph with his right, according to NJ.com. As a senior at Cartersville high, where his dad is a Spanish teacher, Seigler batted for a .421 average with 13 home runs.

Rounding out the first round for Georgians was Ethan Hankins, a right-handed pitcher from Cumming who was picked up by the Cleveland Indians with the 35th overall pick.

MLB.com wrote that Hankins had the chance to be the No. 1 overall pick, but battled a "muscular issue behind his throwing shoulder" that caused him to miss some valuable playing time. He is 6-foot-6 and finished the season with 37 strikeouts over 20 innings.

Brookwood’s Will Banfield and Grayson’s Parker Meadows were both drafted in the second round. Meadows went to the Detroit Tigers at pick No. 44 and Banfield was drafted by the Miami Marlins at the 69th spot.
