More plans filed for Gwinnett’s Avalon-inspired ‘Revel’ development

The mixed-use megaproject being planned on the campus of Gwinnett County’s Infinite Energy Center has taken another step forward.

Developer North American Properties filed Monday paperwork with the state that designates the project — which has been dubbed “Revel” — as a development of regional impact. For large undertakings, the state of Georgia has the authority to evaluate plans and determine if they meet certain thresholds.

Revel definitely qualifies as a large undertaking.

The documents filed Monday provided updated breakdowns of how much space will be devoted to different uses at the development. They suggest that the 118-acre campus will include a hotel with 325 rooms; 950 residential units; 850,000 square feet of office space; 350,000 square feet of retail; and 50,000 square feet of restaurant space.

All of that will be built at the same time Gwinnett County’s Convention and Visitors Bureau — which is working in partnership with North American on the project — will be significantly expanding its existing convention and arts centers and making updates to the Infinite Energy Arena.

North American Properties is the team behind the revival of Atlantic Station, the current redevelopment of Atlanta’s Colony Square and Alpharetta’s super-successful Avalon development. Managing partner Mark Toro previously said ground could be broken on Revel by March 2019.

Monday’s filings suggested it wouldn’t be complete until 2023.

Before you know it, you’re saddled with an inconceivable and seemingly insurmountable entanglement of logistical (and probably emotional) baggage. Come sit on...
