UPDATE: The planning commission tabled its vote on the June Ivey development proposal until its June 5 meeting.

ORIGINAL STORY, published April 23: Gwinnett's planning commission is scheduled to vote next week on a hotly contested proposal to bring a sprawling new subdivision to a rural area of the county.

The proposed rezoning — which would help pave the way for a 356-home subdivision on about 160 wooded acres near June Ivey and Indian Shoals roads — is slated to be voted upon during the planning commission's Tuesday night meeting.

The commission held a public hearing on the proposed development in March and was greeted by dozens of neighbors protesting the project, arguing that it would spoil the rural character of their eastern Gwinnett community.

If the planning commission votes affirmatively, the county’s Board of Commissioners would still have to approve the rezoning proposal necessary for the development to move forward.
