DeKalb commissioners approve gun control resolution

Atlanta police said they estimated that about 30,000 protesters, many of whom were students, filled the streets of downtown Atlanta in an effort to push lawmakers to change gun laws in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting.

In a non-binding and mostly symbolic measure, members of the DeKalb Board of Commissioners approved a gun control resolution they say is in response to a Florida school shooting, as well as events closer to home.

The measure was approved 6-1. Among other things, it encourages state and federal lawmakers and retailers to limit or prohibit gun sales to people under age 21 or who have been diagnosed with mental illness and slow down or eliminate the sale of "bump stocks" and assault-style weapons.

Commissioners Nancy Jester voted “no,” saying she supported finding a way to address gun violence but felt the resolution did not completely reflect her thinking. Jester is the sole Republican on the board.

“I don’t really find anything objectionable, but there were some other things I would probably add here just to be consistent with my philosophical thoughts on the issue,” she said.
