Cobb took an important step toward building a 3-mile trail along the banks of the Chattahoochee River this week by approving an agreement the Atlanta Regional Commission.

The Chattahoochee River Trail would consist of a 12-foot-wide paved path running along both the Cobb and Atlanta sides of the river, possibly with a pedestrian bridge connecting the two banks.

“This is an exciting project,” said Commissioner Lisa Cupid, who represents the district. “I'm grateful to partner with the city of Atlanta to see this project move forward.”

The estimated total project cost for the project is $1.5 million, most of which to be covered by federal funds. Cobb’s contribution of $100,000 will come out of a SPLOST fund.

The trail would pass through a new park planned for Mableton, the naming of which sparked controversy earlier this year. Residents want it to be called Mableton Discovery Park, while preservationists want a name that pays homage to the Civil War earthworks located on the site. The decision on a name was postponed while development of the park goes forward.
