6th District: Cobb elections official refuses to certify Handel win

Karen Handel’s victory in the 6th Congressional District runoff came after winning the support of a number of former rivals and critics within her own Republican Party. Curtis Compton/ccompton@ajc.com

A member of the Cobb County Board of Elections, Jessica Brooks, abstained Monday from the vote to certify Rep. Karen Handel’s victory over Jon Ossoff in the sixth district congressional race.

The motion to certify the results still carried with three ‘yes’ votes, and one other member absent, according to Elections Board Director Janine Eveler.

Brooks was appointed by the Democratic Party to a four-year term ending in 2019.

Reached by phone, Brooks said she had "no comment" on her reasons for abstaining, but said they "absolutely" had nothing to do with a security breach of Kennesaw State University's Election Center.
