Proposed APS board resolution: Shootings require ‘complex solutions’

The Atlanta Board of Education is scheduled to vote Monday on a proposed resolution calling for more money for mental health staff and school security.

The Atlanta Board of Education is scheduled to vote Monday on a proposed resolution calling for more money for mental health staff and school security.

The Atlanta school board will consider adopting a school safety resolution that expresses support for student activists and calls for more money for security and counselors but does not explicitly mention gun-law reforms.

The two-page proposed resolution, which will go before the Atlanta Board of Education on Monday, does not directly reference guns or advocate for gun control as some students have done through walkouts and marches following the Feb. 14 Parkland, Fla., school shooting.

Instead, the school board’s suggested language states that school shootings “have complex causes requiring complex solutions.” The proposed resolution states that the school board “stands with Atlanta students and students across the nation in demanding effective and comprehensive action from the federal government to protect schoolchildren” and calls for more federal money for school security, counselors, mental health staff, psychologists and social workers.

“Thousands of students across the nation have publicly expressed concern for their safety and well-being and have indicated that policymakers should act immediately to protect them in school and beyond,” the proposed resolution states.
