Tech-giant Google launched its 2018 Google Science Fair in Atlanta on Thursday.

Students ages 13 to 18 are invited to submit projects online through Dec. 12 for a chance to win a $50,000 scholarship and other prizes.

Roughly 100 Atlanta Public Schools students attended the launch and used it as a chance to think about ideas for the contest, which seeks projects that solve real-world problems using science, technology, engineering, and math.

Regional winners are announced in the spring, and 20 finalists from around the world later in the year.

"This is an opportunity for our kids to have global exposure to problem solving," said Atlanta Superintendent Meria Carstarphen, in a written statement.
