Atlanta police are investigating a fatal shooting in southwest Atlanta on Friday afternoon.

A former Georgia State University student sitting in a car outside a dorm was shot and wounded early Saturday by a fellow passenger, campus police said.

The incident took place around 4:30 a.m., said Georgia State police Chief Joseph Spillane.

The ex-student was one of four people inside in a vehicle outside The Commons, located at 141 Piedmont Ave. near downtown Atlanta. Spillane said they were talking to another person outside the dorm when one passenger fired one or two shots at the ex-student, who was wounded in the face. The shooter is not a student, Spillane said.

The victim was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for surgery, Spillane said. He since was identified as Nikari Elder.

Police recovered a gun and marijuana from the vehicle, Spillane said. The people in the vehicle and the person outside the vehicle were discussing getting more drugs, the chief said.

The alleged shooter, Musleem Jones, 24, was charged with aggravated assault.
