Cobb County School District teachers will receive an additional 1.5 percent raise, for a total raise this year of 2.6 percent, after the school district reported more growth in the property tax digest than anticipated.
The school board previously approved a 1.1 percent raise for employees. On Thursday, the board unanimously agreed to tack on an additional 1.5 percent after officials said that the Cobb County property value digest increased by 8.2 percent, more than the 6 percent estimate on which the budget was based.
"Last year we could not afford to do a 2 percent raise, with the new revenue that we are realizing, with the additional digest growth, we are able to afford that raise now," Superintendent Chris Ragsdale told board members.
The district said all non-temporary employees and substitutes will receive the raise. Eligible teachers also will receive a step-increase.
The school board also adopted the millage rate, maintaining it at 18.9-mills instead of rolling it back to 17.584 mills to offset growth from reassessments, according to a June news release from the school district. That reflects a 7.48 percent tax increase.
