Chantz Cooper's grandmother was a bystander who reportedly died during the alleged shooting exchange with police.

A Georgia man was indicted Wednesday in the death of his grandmother, who was shot and killed in July as he exchanged gunfire with Savannah police.

The Savannah Morning News reported that Chantz Alexander Cooper faces felony murder charges following the July 27 death of his grandmother, Cynthia Ann Fields.

Cooper, 20, of Savannah, was also indicted on charges stemming from an alleged armed robbery attempt and assault that occurred the same day on Newcastle Street, the Morning News reported. That caused officers to look for him, leading to the shootout in the 1600 block of Stratford Street.

Fields was a bystander in a home while Cooper traded gunfire with police, authorities said. It is unclear if she was hit by gunfire from officers or Cooper.

No officers were injured.

The GBI was called to investigate the incident.
