A Lithia Springs High School teacher remained hospitalized in stable condition the day after he shot himself in his classroom office.

Douglas County School System spokeswoman Karen Stroud said in an email Saturday evening that the yet-to-be publicly identified man who shot himself early Thursday was still in stable condition Friday afternoon, the most-recent information shared by the district.

Officials have released few details about the incident, which took place before students entered the school and caused classes to be cancelled Thursday. No one has said if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Teachers are not permitted to have weapons in the district's schools.

"Law enforcement is in charge of the initial investigation into the situation regarding the teacher's self-inflicted gunshot wound and should be able to release an initial report soon. After their investigation is completed, they will file the appropriate legal charges in the case and it will be processed through the legal system," Stroud stated.

She said the school district "will handle personnel actions as appropriate in this case."

A Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokesman did not return calls for comment Friday.

Officials previously said the teacher is an 18-year veteran of the district.
