Cherokee County schools sent out a message to parents Monday saying that two River Ridge High School students were arrested on weapons charges.
The students, whose names are not being disclosed due to privacy laws, were charged by the school police for possessing a weapon on a school campus.
“They also will face severe administrative discipline and may face additional criminal charges from local law enforcement agencies,” the email to parents says.
The two allegedly brought two unloaded guns and ammunition inside the school Friday for use off campus after school. There was no apparent or stated intent on the part of either student to do any harm to anyone at school, according to the email.
The school system got a report from an unnamed individual of the incident Monday, and an investigation immediately began and led to the arrests.
“We take the safety and security of every student and staff member very seriously and will not tolerate any actions that may endanger them,” the email says.
The school system has implemented an alert system that allows students, parents, staff and anyone in the community the ability to report school safety concerns anonymously.
