A deadly wreck shut down I-75 South in Cobb County for hours Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Cobb County authorities have identified a woman killed in a weekend collision between a car and an SUV towing a boat.

Melissa Gail Cole, 52, of Marietta, died after an accident on I-75 near South Marietta Parkway around 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Marietta police said in a news release.

She was driving her 2006 silver Mazda 3 south on I-75 when she lost control of her vehicle for an unknown reason and spun out of control, the release said.

Her vehicle ended up in the path of a 2007 Chevy Suburban towing a 1999 Bayliner recreational boat, which didn’t have enough time to avoid colliding with the Mazda, witnesses told police.

A 31-year-old Roswell man was in the Mazda’s passenger seat, and he was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with life-threatening injuries, the release said. His name has not been released because his family hasn’t been notified.

The Chevy’s driver, a 38-year-old man from Illinois, was traveling to Florida with his wife and children, the release said. None of them were badly hurt in the incident and didn’t go to the hospital.

The accident shut down I-75 South until around 2 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Marietta police investigators at 770-794-5300.
