Student, 6, found with unloaded gun at Georgia school

Highlights

No injuries were reported, according to the Lamar County superintendent.

A 6-year-old student was found with an unloaded handgun at school, the Lamar County superintendent said Thursday.

After the student showed the gun to another student, the classmate reported it to an adult, who immediately secured the backpack, Superintendent Jute Wilson said in a statement. Administrators were notified.

“There is no evidence the child intended to hurt anyone,” Wilson said. “The weapon was never loaded, brandished or used to threaten anyone.”

School officials worked with Barnesville police and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office on the incident, which will be handled according to state and district policies, Wilson said.
