Roswell lawyer says he’s a mail theft victim — again

One victim said it's the second time it's happened to him in just a matter of months.

A Roswell man said he has been the victim of mail theft twice in recent months, and police are investigating the latest incident, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“Bothers me,” lawyer Clifford Hardwick said.

He didn’t know about the problem until he checked on some checks he had mailed from a local office complex.

“Later in the month,” he said, “I was trying to reconcile my bank statement, and seven checks had not cleared. It had been three weeks since I had written the checks, so that was a little unusual.”

His banker called to say someone was trying to cash one of his checks.

"These checks had to have been stolen from the post office or the mail,” Hardwick said, “because of the way I put them in the mailbox at the end of the day."

He also has reported the incident to the U.S. Postal Service. However, police have no suspects, Channel 2 reported.

"Now, not only does my checking account have forged checks going out,” he said, “but my credit cards, at least four of them, the accounts are known to these thieves, also."

He said the same thing happened about six months ago.

“I just wrote it off as checks were lost in the mail.”
