Police: Incident with man at school bus stop a ‘misunderstanding’

Police in Jefferson said a situation involving a man at a school bus stop was a ‘misunderstanding.’

Police in Jefferson said a situation involving a man at a school bus stop was a ‘misunderstanding.’

A man who sparked a police lookout with his actions near a school bus stop in northeast Georgia actually has a grandchild who rides the bus.

The incident Tuesday was a “misunderstanding,” Jefferson police said on Facebook.

The man had not been told that his grandchild didn't need to be picked up that afternoon, police said.

The incident began when a city school bus went to drop off two siblings off Jett Roberts Road. A car was near the stop, and an older, balding man with gray hair was driving.

“The male called out to the two children and attempted to get them to come get into his vehicle,” police said at the time. “The male apparently even called them by their names.”

Police said the bus driver did not recognize the car and thought the situation was unusual. The children did not know the man.

The bus driver did not let the children off the bus and called their mother, who had not sent anybody to pick up her children.

The man then drove away.

It’s not clear how police learned of the “misunderstanding.” But they remain committed to safety.

“While this incident turned out to be nothing,” police said, “we can never be too safe when children are involved.”
