UPDATE: GBI IDs patient shot by officer in Georgia hospital

A man became combative with hospital officers, the GBI said.

According to authorities, Octavius Daniels tried to disarm one of the officers.

The officer shot the Daniels, critically injuring him.

A patient is in critical condition after he was shot by a hospital officer during a confrontation, the GBI said.

The incident happened Tuesday at Navicent Hospital in Milledgeville after Octavius Daniels, who expressed suicidal thoughts at his apartment, was taken to the hospital by Baldwin County sheriff’s deputies, GBI spokesman Bahan Rich said in a news release.

At the hospital, Daniels became combative with two hospital police officers and medical personnel, Rich said. Officials used a Taser on him and restrained him.

“The subject calmed down and became cooperative and the restraints were removed,” Rich said.

However, Daniels became combative again and attempted to disarm one of the officers, the GBI said. Additional attempts to deploy a Taser were unsuccessful, Rich said, and an officer shot Daniels. No officers or hospital staff were injured.

Daniels, 25, was taken to Navicent Hospital in Macon, where he is in critical condition.

The GBI is investigating, which is routine in use-of-force cases.
