Officer shoots, kills home invasion suspect

A Georgia police officer shot and killed someone who was involved in a home invasion and armed robbery early Tuesday, authorities said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the Statesboro incident, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

Shortly after 1 a.m., officers responded after three people reportedly entered a residence and held the people inside at gunpoint, Miles said.

When officers arrived, they found one of the people behind another residence and used a Taser in an attempt to arrest the person. Shots were fired, and the person suffered a fatal wound, Miles said.

A second suspect was arrested near the scene, Miles said. The third person involved is at large.

GBI agents are interviewing witnesses and processing the scene, Miles said. An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah. When the investigation is complete, results will be turned over to the Bulloch County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Statesboro is about 210 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

The officer who was involved has been put on administrative leave until the investigation is over, the Statesboro Herald reported.

Anyone with information about the person at large is asked to call 912-764-9911.
