Man accused of shooting and killing girlfriend, escaping police

Highlights

The man was caught early Saturday near I-85, Gwinnett police said.

He called 911 and said he shot his girlfriend, according to police.

The suspect allegedly ran from officers after he asked to be checked by medical personnel.

A man suspected in the shooting death of his girlfriend was captured after he escaped and led officers on a chase overnight, Gwinnett police said.

The events began just before 10:30 p.m. Friday when a man called 911 and said he shot his girlfriend in the chest, Sgt. Jacob Albright said in a news release.

The man was identified as John David Briggs, 23, police said Saturday afternoon.

Police responded to the 5500 block of Estates Court in the Norcross area.

Authorities found a woman’s body in the bathroom, and the caller was still on the scene, Albright said. The man was taken into custody without incident.

Police identified the woman as Chessington Marshall, 26.

The man asked to be checked out by medical personnel, and while still in handcuffs, he ran from the scene, police said.

Shortly after midnight, the suspect was seen by an officer at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and I-85.

The officer chased the man on foot and he soon was captured, still handcuffed behind his back, according to Albright. A DeKalb County police aviation unit assisted in the search.

Briggs is in the Gwinnett County jail on charges of felony murder and aggravated assault.
