UPDATE: Teen surrenders after high school football player killed in accidental shooting

A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Mays High School football player, according to Atlanta police.

Jefferey Reeves arrived at Atlanta police headquarters with his mother to turn himself in early Monday, less than 24 hours after the death of 15-year-old Carlos Davis II, Officer Lisa Bender said in a statement.

The shooting, which happened about 7 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 800 block of Mercury Drive, was an accident, according to police.

Carlos was visiting friends at the northwest Atlanta home when he was shot in a bedroom, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“The investigation revealed that Reeves was playing with a pistol in a room full of people, including the victim, when the gun fired and the victim was shot,” Bender said.

The homeowner was inside the residence at the time, Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee said.

Someone drove Carlos to Grady Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. The teen later died at the hospital.

Police have not said who drove Carlos to the hospital, what kind of gun was used in the shooting and who owned the gun.

The athletics department at Mays High School announced Carlos’ death on its Twitter page.

“We are sending prayers to his family, football family and friends,” the school said.
