Man killed after kidnapping woman, shootout with DeKalb police

Channel 2's Carl Willis reports.

A man was killed in a shootout Tuesday with DeKalb County police after holding a woman against her will and exchanging gunfire with officers, officials said.

Police responded to a report of a home invasion at The Reserve at Stone Creek on South Hairston Road, according to DeKalb police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell.

The man broke into an apartment, kidnapped the woman and fired shots at officers when they arrived, police told Channel 2 Action News.

He then barricaded himself in an apartment before police fired tear gas inside, police told Channel 2. After an hour-long standoff, the man came out firing and officers fired back, officials said.

The man died at a local hospital. His name has not been released.

The GBI is investigating the incident, one of three shootings over the course of six hours Tuesday involving a Georgia police officer or sheriff’s deputy.
