Henry Hankerson, an assistant principal at Baldwin High School, is accused of animal cruelty.

A Georgia high school administrator was charged with animal cruelty after a dead dog was found on his property, officials said.

And according to the Oconee Radio Group, a second dog was discovered in a black bag at the home of Baldwin High School assistant principal and athletic director Henry Hankerson.

The dog had been dead for some time, the news station reported.

Toombs County sheriff’s deputies initially responded to animal cruelty complaints Sunday at Hankerson’s home, Sheriff Alvie Kight said.

Deputies discovered “deplorable living conditions” and the dead dog at his Bostwick Circle residence, which is about 173 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

The dog appeared to have been “dead for several days and ... chained in the past,” according to a Toombs County incident report.

There were several bowls of water near the dog, but no food, police said.

Authorities secured an arrest warrant, and Hankerson surrendered Monday on the misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.

Hankerson, 45, of Vidalia, was released on a $5,000 bond, Kight said.

Charges have not yet been filed in connection with the second dog.
