Rockmart police have increased patrols after a mother said a man tried to abduct her children while they were at the bus stop Thursday morning.

A Polk County mother said her children were nearly abducted after a man ran onto her porch while they were waiting for their school bus.

Heather Pomponi’s children were standing outside their Rockmart home Thursday morning when the man ran toward them with his arms spread open, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“I wanted to throw up,” she said. “It happened so quickly.”

The entire incident was captured on surveillance video, Channel 2 reported.

“He comes up on the porch and he looks at the window and at the door,” she told the news station. “I think maybe he thought they were home alone.”

Pomponi confronted the man once her children were inside the house.

“The nice version of what I said was: ‘What are you doing on my porch with my children?’” she told Channel 2.

Pomponi yelled at the man to get off her porch, to which he claimed someone was chasing him.

But Pomponi followed him back toward the bus stop and saw he was facing a young boy, Channel 2 reported.

“I yelled at the little boy to go inside,” she said.

Rockmart police are investigating the case and have increased patrols in the area.

Pomponi said she will start driving her children to school.

“Just the thought that they could be gone,” she said. “They could be gone that fast, right as I’m a couple of feet away.”
