UPDATE: GBI artist hopes facial reconstruction will help ID remains found in Buford

Human remains found in the Buford area have gone unidentified since they were discovered in 2015.

However, a GBI forensic artist hopes a new model will trigger someone’s memory, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“I just have a good feeling about it,” the GBI’s Kelly Lawson said of her 3D facial reconstruction.

The skull and bones from what is believed to be a man were found by a work crew clearing brush along a sewer line near Ga. 20 and Buford Highway, according to the news station.

The man was believed to be 25 to 40 years old at the time of his death, Gwinnett police said Wednesday in a statement.

“He may be between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-7,” police Cpl. Michele Pihera said. “The remains show multiple composite fillings and one root canal involving a tooth of the lower jaw.”

At first, the workers who found the remains thought it was a Halloween decoration, but they soon realized it was the real thing.

“It appears the bones were out there for an extended period of time,” Pihera said.

The Gwinnett medical examiner’s office found a second set of bones in March 2017.

“The Medical Examiner is theorizing that the man may have been associated with the contractors responsible for the nearby subdivisions,” police said at the time.

No clothing or other possessions were found.

Police also aren’t sure if the death was crime-related or due to natural causes. The  medical examiner still has not determined a cause of death.

“Somebody knows him,” Lawson said, “somebody out there knows him.”
