A former Clayton County deputy was arrested Friday evening after turning himself in on charges of theft and violation of oath, officials said.

Edward Hobbs, 45, who resigned last year, failed to turn in a computer and cellphone that he confiscated from a suspect more than a year ago, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The computer was allegedly discovered at the former deputy’s home.

Hobbs also was arrested last year on charges of insurance fraud and forgery, the sheriff’s office said.

After a woman ran into the back of the deputy’s unmarked car, leaving no damage to either vehicle, Hobbs allegedly went to the hospital without reporting it to the sheriff’s office. He then contacted the woman’s insurance company and made a false claim by forging a letter from his supervisor saying he was out of work, though he reported for duty at the time, officials said.
