On Jan. 6, 2017, a Delta flight from Atlanta had just landed when a gunman began shooting near the Terminal 2 baggage claim.

Santiago flew into Fort Lauderdale on a separate flight from Anchorage, Alaska, went to the restroom, retrieved a gun from his luggage, loaded it and started shooting. He was later taken into custody.

Among those killed was Olga Woltering, an 84-year-old retiree from Cobb County who flew to Fort Lauderdale for a cruise to celebrate her husband Ralph's 90th birthday.

Earlier this year, Woltering’s family filed a lawsuit against Delta, the Fort Lauderdale airport and its security contractors, alleging they “breached the duty of care.”
