Driver ditches moving truck — and girlfriend — during chase, police say

Dashcam video shows the Oct. 25 incident in Johns Creek.

The driver left his girlfriend in the passenger seat of the moving truck.

Police later found the man hiding in woods nearby.

Police say everyone is fortunate that a “completely dangerous” action by a driver who jumped from a moving pickup truck didn’t cause a crash.

Dashcam video from an Oct. 25 incident on McGinnis Ferry Road in Johns Creek shows an officer spot a suspicious truck driven by Jason Robinson of Dawsonville, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“Ran the tag,” Capt. Chris Byers told Channel 2. “The tag ultimately came back stolen.”

The video then shows Robinson pull into a parking lot.

When police closed in, Robinson jumped from the driver’s side and let the truck keep rolling forward — with his girlfriend in the passenger seat. He ran from the scene.

The girlfriend was able to reach across the console and hit the brake, Byers said. Inside the truck, officers found meth.

The woman told police the driver’s name, Byers said.

Soon, officers found Robinson hiding in the woods.

“We had other jurisdictions come and assist us with their (police dogs),” Byers said, “and he was tracked a short time later.”

Robinson is in the Fulton County jail facing several charges, including drug possession and driving on a suspended or revoked license, according to jail records.

He has outstanding warrants from other counties, Channel 2 reported. Robinson’s girlfriend is not facing charges.
